Shaving Help

Postby Althea Raine » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:54 am

This is actually kind of embarrassing but fuck it I'm tired of this

I am a person who likes to be non-hairy in all respects. Problem is, when I shave my pubic hair and the hair on my lower stomach (i.e. below my navel; I don't get hair above there), it never ends up shaving smooth and I can feel the stubble even immediately after. Then to make it worse for like three days, I have a really irritating stubbly/bumpy rash around my groin (fun!) and I get ingrown hairs.

Can anyone help me with this?

No real help, but support. I shave that area too. The tummy stubble is a problem. I think it's because that area isn't really smooth. When I push on it with the razor, it just gives in. I haven't figured out a better way to do it. It looks smooth, but doesn't feel smooth. It does bug.

As far as the nether regions, it sounds like razor burn maybe. Shaving down there definitely isn't comfy or anything, but I don't have that problem and can generally get it smooth. It does grow back way quicker than I'd like, though. Do you use shaving cream down there? It can kind of burn a little on certain...umm...parts, but overall, it sounds less painful than the rash and bumps you've been dealing with. If you do use shaving cream, then I'm out of tips.

Those areas are really sensitive and most people can't shave them including my wife and myself. I can't do my legs above my knees or else I get ingrown hairs. Never had a problem below my knees. Home wax kit is your friend. Its the only way for my wife and myself to not get the irritation. My wife waxes everything but I find it quicker to shave anything that does not get irritated.

You can try the chemical stuff but if a razor does it that stuff might react badly.

When I started shaving I had horrible bumps for about a month - ingrown hairs, prickly heat...it totally sucked. But a girlfriend of mine told me to keep at it and to exfoliate and keep shaving those areas once a week. And my wife gave me a shaving cream called Coochy Cream. I also applied powder to those areas to keep sweat at bay while things healed...

I do know that when you start shaving, your skin and the hairs are not at all used to that sort of treatment and it is easy to develop rashes, bumps and get ingrown hairs. I had this on my arms, my chest, my belly and crotch very badly.

But after a month or so, exfoliating every other day, and shaving those areas each week, the rashes and ingrown hairs started to clear up and these days I don't get nearly as many.

I also find that if you use a blade and then one of those "intimate" shavers that they make for women, you can greatly reduce the stubble. I use one of these on my face before I apply makeup. http://www.seikocleancut.com/?gclid=CO3OtsG5jqMCFQ4TswodGRl4ZA

I have a suggestion that sounds crazy, but actually works for me. Try using a good exfoliant as the 'shaving cream'. For me, the result is much smoother skin than with a cream. I use this technique only for my face, though, so I'm not 100% sure it will help with your tummy. For body hair, I use Nair.

I also use a Nair product, works great. Just make sure you rinse it all off, and wear gloves so that you don't get it on your nails (it'll make them more prone to breakage). HRT also fixed much of the body hair problem for me; I find that I'm less inclined to want to strip it all away when it's blonde fuzz instead.

Thanks guys! Girls. Whatevurr.

Actually, I've tried Nair, and it didn't seem to work too well. Maybe I'll just try it again...see how bad it is this time.

For my face, though, I use olive oil - closest, smoothest, best shave I've ever had. Follow it up with aloe gel (well, after washing the oil off)

Moisturize every day no matter what. Get some lotion from Bath and Body. http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/family/ ... cp=2484525
Not the gell. Use that every day you don't shave.
Use Skin So Soft immediately after you dry off on days you shave.
I use http://www.olay.com/pages/OlayClassicsP ... oisturizer on super sensitive areas instead of SSS. Such as pits, chest, face and the boys.
Use a sensitive skin shaving gell when you shave. I use a Venus Spa Breeze if that makes a difference.

I don't really have any issues and get compliments on how smooth my legs are.

Meh... moisturize constantly.
Oh and I use Dove soap only.

I never have the issues mentioned since I started doing these things. I never exfoliate because I have sensitive skin and that makes it worse.

Edit:
Nair is evil :x

I have to buy some after shower moisturizer. I moisturize my hands, forearms, and elbows a lot and moisturize my face once or twice a day, but I forget about the rest, more times than not. I love the smell of Bath and Body Works' stuff, but sometimes it's just too greasy for me. I use Aveeno, which is unscented, more times than not and it works really well. I'm kind of wondering if there's a "best of both worlds" out there though. Maybe Caress or something?

Oh, and I just ordered that Noxema Hair Minimizing Shave Gel with capislow that I Birgid talked about awhile ago. I had to get it from the web, because absolutely nobody in my area carries the stuff. I'm hoping that will make it so I don't have to scrape the crap out of my face for 10 minutes straight every single day.

Hiya,, As in most cases, All hair doesn't grow in the same direction, Try shaving your tummy from left to right, Then from right to left across the tummy, it works for me. I know what your talking about, if you just shave up, you feel stuble. Your not cutting the hair which grows in the opposite direction. Hope this helps

I'd rather wash up BEFORE I shave, as I've been told to do.

I shave my armpits, so I know this technique all too well...doesn't work on tummy too well.

As for the rest of you guys - thank you!

@Misty
The reason I like B&B is because the scents last all day long.
I don't know why it is greasy. It should dry off in 10 minutes or so. I usually lotion up before I hang upside down to dry my hair. By the time I am done it is dry.

@tara_giles
I have no idea what you meant by "shave before you get wet." Even if it was a joke I don't get it.

I actually tried some of it on my legs the other day and it wasn't too bad. I was using it on my hands and greasy hands bug the crap out of me. I can see using it on my body and, yeah, I do love the smell...Sweet Pea and Cherry Blossom are wonderful. For hands though, I'll stick with Aveeno.

I have tried that, and it was not as complete as I was hoping. It left maybe about half the hairs still there. :/ Maybe I shoudl try getting it professionally done

Yeah, it's way to messy for me. I probably just don't know what I'm doing.

As others here have said already exfoliating is effective with the problem.

This is a slow and fairly uncomfortable method, but I use tweezers on that region. Doesn't seem to grow back as fast and I find I don't get ingrown hairs from it. Not nearly as fast as shaving, but I definitely get better results from it and the discomfort of plucking hairs out is still shorter than the discomfort of stubble and ingrown hairs.

ETA: This is best done when the hair is short. Otherwise you have to painstakingly make sure you have hold of the hair near the root before each one you pull. What registers as a slight tug near the root will be painful if grabbed too far up.

The only thing I've found to help with the bumpy rash thing is to keep shaving, I mean not to the point of mutilating yourself but enough to toughen up the skin. Most people have had the same issue shaving their faces but it goes away after a while. I think HRT has helped also because it has changed my skin oils and perhaps in the process possibly reduced my proclivity towards those tiny localized infections.
